Metabolic syndrome is a major enemy of white-collar health. It is not a real disease, but a health risk signal from the body, and is a collective term for abnormal blood pressure, blood lipids, blood sugar and waist circumference. According to statistics, more than 50% of office workers suffer from this problem, so what can we do to prevent metabolic syndrome?
Yoga can prevent metabolic syndrome
A team of scientists from Sweden and India have recently announced that yoga can make practitioners feel physically and mentally happy, and can also reverse the pathological and biochemical changes caused by metabolic syndrome. The research has been published in the prestigious academic journal Diabetes Research and Clinical Applications.
After three months, it was found that those who practised yoga had significantly lower waist circumference, blood pressure, blood sugar and body fat compared to those who received general medical care, while HDL cholesterol, a good cholesterol, was was relatively higher.
Kjellgren, a scientist from Sweden, selected 55 healthy adults to study the benefits of yoga-style breathing poses. The subjects were divided into two groups over a six-week period. One group practised yogic breathing for one hour a day, including slow, normal and rapid breathing movements. The other group rested in a comfort chair for 15 minutes each day. It was found that those who practised yoga experienced significantly lower levels of anxiety, stress and depression and higher levels of optimism compared to the other group.
Professor Satyguru, who led the joint research team, said that yoga not only prevented metabolic syndrome caused by poor lifestyles, but was also a good aid in treating illnesses when they occurred.
